Indian rupee gets a symbol, joins elite currency club

The Indian rupee will soon have a unique symbol — a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R' — joining elite currencies like the US dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen in having a distinct identity.

The new symbol, designed by Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, was approved by the cabinet today — reflecting that the Indian currency, backed by an over-trillion dollar economy, was finally making its presence felt on the international scene.

"It's a big statement on the Indian currency... The symbol would lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and global face of the Indian economy," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

Though the symbol will not be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins, it would be included in the 'Unicode Standard' and major scripts of the world to ensure that it is easily displayed and printed in the electronic and print media.

Among currencies with distinctive identities, only the pound sterling has its symbol printed on the notes.

Unicode is an international standard that allows text data to be interchanged globally without conflict. After incorporation in the global and Indian codes, the symbol would be used by all individuals and entities within and outside the country.

The symbol will be adopted in a span of six months in the country, and within 18 to 24 months globally, Soni said, adding that it will feature on computer keyboards and softwares for worldwide use.

Soni said that the symbol, which reflects the Indian ethos and culture, would help distinguish the currency from the rupee or rupiah of other countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Besides this, state governments would be asked to proactively promote the use of the new symbol, she added.

Kumar's entry was chosen from 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol. He will get an award of Rs 2.5 lakh.

"It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters — capital 'R' and Devanagri 'Ra' which represents rupaiah, to appeal to international and Indian audiences... My design is based on the tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between," a visibly-happy Kumar said.

Fire at oil depot in Jaipur; 5 killed, more then 100 injured

Five persons were killed and at least 90 people injured when a massive fire broke out in an oil depot in Sanganer area in Jaipur on Thursday night. Many of the injured are reportedly in critical condition.

All four oil containers at the depot have exploded due to the fire.

Two villages in the vicinity have been evacuated and people in one km radius have been asked to stay out. Efforts are still on to douse the fire but is not yet under control.

The Indian Oil Corporation has said that the fire broke out due to leakage in petrol pipeline. The IOC has meanwhile sent teams to Jaipur from Delhi and Mumbai.

Meanwhile, fire tenders have been sent to oil depot from Mathura.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has appealed to Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora for help; And 80 Army Jawans have been helping in the rescue operation.

The oil depot contains about 80-90 lakh litres of fuel products however, exact extent of damage has yet to be assessed.

13 years old boy could get 21 years in US jail

He is the youngest person to be accused of robbing a bank that many in this midwestern US town can remember, and now he could end up spending a good chunk of his life behind bars.

A judge in the juvenile court, noting the premeditation and the “extremely aggressive” manner in which Denote Moore, 13, pointed an unloaded handgun at several bank tellers last month, ordered his case be moved to adult court.

The mid-day heist on April 13 shocked many in this Rust Belt city.

Sheriff Michael McCoy said Moore was the youngest person to be arrested for bank robbery in his 37 years on the force. A prosecutor said he could not remember another such case in his 19 years of work.

The move means a potential prison sentence for Moore of 21 to 45 years.

Had the case remained in the juvenile courts, Moore’s imprisonment would have ended on his 21st birthday.

The robbery occurred at about 11:35 am.

Moore was arrested within 30 minutes after hiding in a garage only a few blocks away from the bank. His clothing was stained red from a dye pack that had exploded in the pillow case where tellers had put the money.

Moore told police he thought he had been shot, hearing the pop and seeing a big puff of red smoke.

The teen told police he had run away from home a month earlier and was stealing to get money for “clothing and stuff.”

Illinois law allows a juvenile to be tried as an adult if he or she is older than 13 and a judge finds “it is not in the best interest of the public” for the minor to remain in the juvenile justice system. Moore will turn 14 next month.

The judge, noting Moore was on probation and failed to comply with counseling and missed several appointments with his probation officer, found the boy to be a poor candidate to work with officials further.

An estimated 200,000 juveniles are tried, sentenced or incarcerated as adults every year in the United States, according to the Campaign for Youth Justice.

An average of 7,500 juveniles are incarcerated in adult jails at any given time and 40 states allow youths charged as adults to be held in adult jails while they wait for their case to be heard.

Killer rabbits attack snakes (video)

A PAIR of rabid rabbits has been caught killing a series of snakes near Cairns.

For three weeks Armando Del Manso believed his dog was responsible for the dead snakes showing up with teeth marks all over them on his East Barron property’s lawn each morning.

But it turns out it was a pair of rampaging rabbits killing the snakes.

The 42-year-old boilermaker first made the discovery Tuesday night when he spotted the two wild rabbits attacking a king brown snake.

“The snake was raised up in the air in the striking position and the two rabbits worked their way around him and killed him in two minutes,” Mr Del Manso said.

“I’m gobsmacked, it’s absolutely incredible.

“We were watching from the veranda with a spotlight, and I thought, who is going to believe this, they’ll think I’m crazy.”

Wildlife expert Paul O’Callaghan of the Cairns Wildlife Safari said it was the first time he had heard of rabbits attacking snakes.

Salman Khan gifts Kareena Kapoor Rs.250,000 bag

Bollywood star Salman Khan went out of his way and gifted a branded bag worth Rs.250,000 to his “Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna” co-star Kareena Kapoor.

Kareena and Salman went shopping together in Australia while they were shooting for the film and the young actress fell for a Dolce and Gabbana handbag.

“Kareena would usually land up shopping in the evenings after the shoot in Australia. She would go alone. But on one occasion, Salman accompanied her too,” said a unit source.

“She instantly liked a Dolce and Gabbana bag, stepped in and bought it. When she was about to pay the storekeeper refused to take the money saying it had already been paid for. Kareena stood zapped and wondered who could be that generous soul. It was only later that she got to know that it was Salman who had paid,” the source added.

The two actors plays main leads in Prem Soni’s directorial debut “Main Aurr Mrs.Khanna”. Sohail Khan, who has co-produced the movie with UTV SpotBoy Pictures, is also starring in it.

The film is scheduled for release Oct 16.

TODAY'S MODERN FAMILY

If you love sitcoms, and are pressed for time, watching ABC's new "Modern Family" could be an efficient solution.

It's like three, maybe four sitcoms all squeezed into one, and quite an enjoyable one.

"Modern Family" starts from the premise that many families today are no longer the classic unit TV loved back in the prehistoric days of "Father Knows Best," or even "Family Ties."

So it assembles a family that looks like it came from the $6.95 all-you-can-eat buffet table: a nervous mother of teenagers with a jerk husband, a gay couple and a grandfather who has married a fiery young Latina.

Almost all of Wednesday night's premiere is consumed with introducing this large cast, which is fine. Our quick glimpses of the characters just being themselves suggests we'll see neurotic, blockheaded, charming, poignant and funny.

In a sitcom, funny is good.

Quick rundown: Jay (Ed O'Neill) is the grandfather and patriarch. He just married Gloria (Sofia Vergara), for reasons that are a total mystery on both sides. Gloria brings along a son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez).

From his earlier marriage, Jay has a daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), who is married to Phil (Ty Burrell), who is such a jerk we don't understand that one, either.

They have three kids - exasperated teenager Haley (Sarah Hyland), smart kid Alex (Ariel Winter) and screwed-up but funny Luke (Nolan Gould).

Jay also has a son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who is in a long-term relationship with Cameron (Eric Stonestreet). Jay tries to pretend he's okay with this, even though he isn't.

Tonight, Mitchell and Cameron adopt a Vietnamese baby, which also serves as a handy dramatic device to bring everyone together and let Jay toss out a casually offensive ethnic reference.

Perhaps most impressive, the producers find time to let each character be an idiot, but also show legitimate family fondness.

Much of what we're likely to see in "Modern Family" we've seen before: nervous mom vs. hormonal teenager; emotional Latina and buttoned-up Yanqui; gay couple that's a little hypersensitive. And so on.

But that's okay. Think of "Modern Family" as a high-quality one-stop.

Ayesha Takia’s sister to enter Bollywood next year

Audiences would now get to see more of Natasha and less of Ayesha on the big screen as the latter has ventured into the business world.

“I’ve done it (films) for so long. I’m now enjoying making my own rules. I’m having a ball concentrating on business ventures. My first boutique hotel in Goa is on. We are hoping to start it this season,” she said.

NRIs treated as "Not Required Indians"

ndubhai Amin, a non-resident Indian (NRI) settled in the UK earns interest income of Rs 3 lakh on his non-resident ordinary account bank deposit
in India in the current FY 2009-10. Enjoying his personal exemption limit of Rs 1.60 lakh and the eligible deduction of Rs 1 lakh u/s 80C, Amin is comfortable paying income tax of Rs 4,000 in the first slab of 10 per cent on his effective taxable income of Rs 40,000.

Flat tax of 20% and 30%

A huge shock awaits Amin and millions of NRIs, in regard to taxation of their interest and investment income and capital gains earned in India, proposed to be treated under the draft Direct Tax Code as "income from special sources."

In 2011-12, on the same interest income of Rs 3 lakh, Amin will be required to pay a hefty tax of Rs 60,000 at the flat rate of 20 per cent, without being eligible to claim any basic exemption or other deduction, as provided under rule three of the First Schedule to the Code.

Moreover, all capital gains earned by a non-resident will attract a flat tax of 30 per cent, irrespective of the amount of capital gains. While a resident Indian will be required to pay tax of Rs 3.84 lakh on his taxable income of Rs 25 lakh, an NRI earning equivalent capital gains will be called upon to pay almost double tax of Rs 7.5 lakh.

Hair-raising drafting

New section 13 (2) provides that such ‘special income’ shall be computed in accordance with the provisions of the Ninth Schedule, the drafting of which is literally hair-raising. It provides that the amount of accrual or receipt shall be computed as the taxable income, and no loss, allowance or deduction shall be allowed, as the same shall be presumed to have been granted. The only exception in this regard, in respect of capital gains arising from the transfer of equity shares or units of equity oriented mutual fund chargeable to STT, is quite amusing, as it stands redundant in view of the proposal to abolish STT (a classic instance of incoherent drafting).

The draftsman does not seem to have realized the harsh implications. It means that if an NRI sells a capital asset purchased for Rs 10 lakh at Rs 30 lakh, he will be required to pay tax of Rs 9 lakh at 30 per cent on the gross sale consideration of Rs 30 lakh without any deduction even for the cost of acquisition of Rs 10 lakh (not to mention any benefit of indexation on the same).

Determination of residential status

The residential status of an individual under the Code is proposed to be determined as per the current norms. However, the status of "not ordinarily resident" (NOR) is proposed to be eliminated. Despite the above, Clause 24 of the Sixth Schedule has still provided for exemption in respect of interest earned on foreign currency deposits in the case of NOR. Poor drafting indeed!

The Code has proposed to retain the current exemptions availed by a non-resident in case of interest earned on NRE and FCNR deposits with banks.

Special exemption for returning NRIs

A useful exemption has been provided in case of income earned outside India, if it is not derived from a business controlled from India, in the financial year in which the returning NRI becomes an Indian resident and the immediately succeeding financial year. However, the benefit of the said exemption would be available, only if such individual was a non-resident for nine years immediately preceding the financial year in which he becomes a resident.

Wealth-tax liability for NRIs

Proposed Section 102 of the Code provides for wealth tax liability in the case of the value of all global assets of an individual or HUF. However, an exemption has been provided in case of the value of assets located outside India in case of an individual who is not a citizen of India or an individual or HUF not resident in India. Hence, while returning NRIs who are non-citizens will enjoy wealth-tax exemption for their overseas assets, NRIs with Indian citizenship becoming residents will attract wealth-tax liability on such assets held abroad.

Illogical exemption under wealth-tax

Talking about wealth tax, the Code prescribes an exemption in respect of any house or plot of land belonging to an individual or HUF, if it is acquired before April 1, 2000. It is difficult to understand the logic as to why this exemption has been denied in all cases where such immovable property is acquired after March 31, 2000!

The discovery of two powerful new HIV antibodies will help tackle HIV more effectively. Researchers will now try to exploit a newfound vulnerability on the virus to craft novel approaches to designing an AIDS vaccine.

Besides, the global collaboration that led to the discovery of the two new broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs) are likely to produce more such antibodies.

They may further reveal additional vulnerabilities of HIV, adding still more vitality to the effort to develop a vaccine against AIDS.

“The findings themselves are an exciting advance toward the goal of an effective AIDS vaccine because now we’ve got a new, potentially better target on HIV to focus our efforts for vaccine design,” said Wayne Koff, senior vice-president of research and development at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Scripps Research Institute.

“And having identified this one, we’re set up to find more, which should further accelerate global efforts in AIDS vaccine development,” he added, according to a statement from the institute.

Sehwag eyeing comeback in T20 Champions League

Virender Sehwag, who is nursing a shoulder injury, is looking to return to international field with the Twenty20 Champions League next month.

Sehwag, who has been out of the team since returning home midway through the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June, will be missing the tri-series in Sri Lanka as well as the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

“I am working hard on my shoulder and hoping that I will be fit before the Champions League T20,” Sehwag said.

“My rehabiliation is going really well. I am pushing myself hard. After first week of September, I will start batting properly in the nets. Normally I am throwing 20 or 50 balls a day but from second or third week of September I will start throwing more and try to play the local tournament if I get a chance,” Sehwag told CNN-IBN.

Sehwag, who kicked up a row after highlighting the nepotism in selection matters of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), said he was happy with the outcome of the meeting with DCCA president Arun Jaitley.

“We had a positive meeting with Arun Jaitley and other members of the DDCA. Even Mr. M.K. Pataudi joined the meeting at my request and I am thankful to him.”

Sehwag said that he was not targeting anyone in DDCA, but was only opposed to the system.

“My fight is against the system. You have to change the system and put some good people who can look after cricket.”

Bhajji revs up controversy again, this time with Hummer

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has probably created more hullabaloo on and off the field than any other celebrity cricketer in India, and this time controversy has come riding on the back of his new Rs.1 crore Hummer SUV.

Bhajji – as he is popularly known – has been found on the wrong side of the law for driving his Hummer on Chandigarh’s roads without a number plate. His vehicle, imported from Britain last month, was Tuesday slapped with a penalty of Rs.3,000 for violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was forced to put up a registration plate, with a temporary Delhi number, on the SUV.

In April this year, he and Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni deliberately gave a miss to the Padma national awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan after they were named this year for the prestigious Padma Shri honour. Both were reportedly busy with commercial shoots and not playing cricket for the country when the awards function took place in April.

Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill was livid and even said the duo needed to learn from legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on how to treat such national honours.

From letting his hair down on the ramp and being featured in an advertisement for liquor – both prohibited by his religion – to having on and off field spats with Australians Andrew Symonds and Mathew Hayden; slapping fellow cricketer S. Sreesanth in full public view and doing a Ravana dance act on a TV dance show last year that got Hindu and Sikh organisations gunning for his blood – Bhajji has done it all.

Even the Sikh clergy was aghast with Bhajji because he posed as a Hindu mythological character and applied Hindu symbols on his forehead. In Hindu mythology, Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, was abducted by demon king Ravana to force her to marry him. Radical Hindu organisations objected to the dance number saying it mocked their gods.

Bhajji, 29, comes from a humble Sikh family in Punjab’s Jalandhar city but is known for his aggressive nature on field, putting him in the class of most badly behaved cricketers.

His mother and one of his sisters live in a small house in Jalandhar’s congested Daulatpuri locality. This sister – he has four other married ones – works in a private bank in Jalandhar and uses a two-wheeler to commute between work and home. Whenever in Jalandhar, Bhajji lives with them.

But the cricketer is now building a lavish house for his family in Jalandhar’s New Baradari area. Two years ago, Bhajji bought a palatial 1,800-square yards bungalow in Chandigarh’s upscale Sector 9. The property is worth Rs.150 million.

Bhajji had landed himself in trouble in April last year after his ‘Slapgate’ controversy in which he slapped fast bowler and fellow Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth after losing an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Mohali.

The incident almost put a stop on his playing career. The slap cost Bhajji a whopping Rs.34 million as he was dumped from IPL and faced a limited ban from playing.

Bhajji’s infamous “monkey” run-in with equally temperamental Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds almost saw India’s tour to Australia being abandoned in 2007.

The bowler also had an on and off-field spat with Australian opener Mathew Hayden who, of course, bit more than he could chew when he called the Bhajji “an obnoxious weed”.

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) at Mohali, near here, had set up a probe against Bhajji in 2005 after he publicly went against then Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell, saying the coach was intimidating players in the team.

The bowler was trying to defend then Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly but ended up being reprimanded by the PCA.

Britain understands the need for economic growth in India and would not pressurise New Delhi to reduce emissions, British Minister for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband said here Tuesday.

“I have not come here to ask your government to reduce emissions. I fully understand the requirement for growth in India, but we need to take the dialogue forward.

“If Copenhagen sends out a message of austerity and low-growth, then there will be few who will accept it. Neither the developed nor the developing world will be amenable to this,” Miliband said during a media interaction.

“I’m here to listen and take the message back to the UK. It is imperative that money is set aside for adaptation so that development is not curtailed once cuts are made. We interacted with the local communities here who are vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. We have seen some of the threats that climate change has posed on these communities,” he said.

He said he was in India to promote high growth and low carbon emission and to learn the country’s needs ahead of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December.

Admitting that the UN Millennium Development Goals have gone off the track, he said the rich countries should also fulfil their promises they had made.

British Minister for International Development Douglas Alexander said, “We are here in South Asia to hear what climate change means for millions of people in India and Bangladesh. For this region, the case for the urgency of tackling climate change is beyond question.

“It’s the poorest who are most vulnerable to these natural disasters.”

He said that Department for International Development (DFID) was spending around Rs.300 crore annually in West Bengal on various sectors including health and nutrition, urban development, public sector reforms and mainstreaming climate change.

Scientists Photograph A Single Molecule!

IBM scientists have been able to image the anatomy -- or chemical structure -- inside a molecule with unprecedented resolution, using a complex technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy. The results push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could greatly impact the field of nanotechnology, which seeks to understand and control some of the smallest objects known to mankind.

"Though not an exact comparison, if you think about how a doctor uses an x-ray to image bones and organs inside the human body, we are using the atomic force microscope to image the atomic structures that are the backbones of individual molecules," said Gerhard Meyer, researcher, IBM. "Scanning probe techniques offer amazing potential for prototyping complex functional structures and for tailoring and studying their electronic and chemical properties on the atomic scale."

The team’s current publication follows on the heels of another experiment published just two months ago in the June 12 issue of Science where IBM scientists measured the charge states of atoms using an AFM. These breakthroughs will open new possibilities for investigating how charge transmits through molecules or molecular networks. Understanding the charge distribution at the atomic scale is essential for building smaller, faster and more energy-efficient computing components than today’s processors and memory devices. These components could one day contribute to IBM's vision of a smarter planet by helping instrument and interconnect the physical world.

As reported in the August 28 issue of Science magazine, IBM Research – Zurich scientists Leo Gross, Fabian Mohn, Nikolaj Moll and Gerhard Meyer, in collaboration with Peter Liljeroth of Utrecht University, used an AFM operated in an ultrahigh vacuum and at very low temperatures ( –268oC or – 451oF) to image the chemical structure of individual pentacene molecules. With their AFM, the IBM scientists, for the first time ever, were able to look through the electron cloud and see the atomic backbone of an individual molecule. While not a direct technological comparison, this is reminiscent of x-rays that pass through soft tissue to enable clear images of bones.

The AFM uses a sharp metal tip to measure the tiny forces between the tip and the sample, such as a molecule, to create an image. In the present experiments, the molecule investigated was pentacene. Pentacene is an oblong organic molecule consisting of 22 carbon atoms and 14 hydrogen atoms measuring 1.4 nanometres in length. The spacing between neighbouring carbon atoms is only 0.14 nanometres — roughly 1 million times smaller then the diameter of a grain of sand. In the experimental image, the hexagonal shapes of the five carbon rings as well as the carbon atoms in the molecule are clearly resolved. Even the positions of the hydrogen atoms of the molecule can be deduced from the image.

“The key to achieving atomic resolution was an atomically sharp and defined tip apex as well as the very high stability of the system,” said Leo Gross, scientist, IBM. To image the chemical structure of a molecule with an AFM, it is necessary to operate in very close proximity to the molecule. The range, where chemical interactions give significant contributions to the forces, is less than a nanometre. To achieve this, the IBM scientists were required to increase the sensitivity of the tip and overcome a major limitation: Similar to the way two magnets would attract or repel each other when getting close, the molecules would easily be displaced by or attach to the tip when the tip was approached too closely — rendering further measurements impossible.

Gross added, “We prepared our tip by deliberately picking up single atoms and molecules and showed that it is the foremost tip atom or molecule that governs the contrast and resolution of our AFM measurements.”

A tip terminated with a carbon monoxide (CO) molecule yielded the optimum contrast at a tip height of approximately 0.5 nanometres above the molecule being imaged and — acting like a powerful magnifying glass — resolved the individual atoms within the pentacene molecule, revealing its exact atomic-scale chemical structure.

Furthermore, the scientists were able to derive a complete three-dimensional force map of the molecule investigated. “To obtain a complete force map the microscope needed to be highly stable, both mechanically and thermally, to ensure that both the tip of the AFM and the molecule remained unaltered during the more than 20 hours of data acquisition,” says Fabian Mohn, who is working on his Ph.D. thesis at IBM Research – Zurich.

To corroborate the experimental findings and gain further insight into the exact nature of the imaging mechanism, IBM scientist Nikolaj Moll performed first-principles density functional theory calculations of the system investigated.

He explains, “The calculations helped us understand what caused the atomic contrast. In fact, we found that its source was Pauli repulsion between the CO and the pentacene molecule.” This repulsive force stems from a quantum mechanical effect called the Pauli exclusion principle. It states that two identical electrons can not approach each other too closely.

The glasses that can find anything

You know the feeling. Call it a senior moment, absent-mindedness or a sign of what a busy active brain you have. We’ve all asked ourselves that irritating question: “Where on earth did I leave my car keys?”

Now a team of Japanese scientists claim to have come up with the answer. And the secretive artificial intelligence project codenamed Smart Goggle does not stop at elusive keys. With Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s invention balanced on your nose, nothing – be it the remote control, mobile phone or iPod – should ever go missing again.

Simply tell the glasses what you are looking for and it will play into your eye a video of the last few seconds you saw that item.

Built on to the glasses is a tiny camera which makes a constant record of everything the wearer sees: the tiny display inside the glasses identifies what is being scanned and a small readout instantly announces what the computer thinks the object probably is. For some things that look different from a range of angles, however, the glasses offer only a “best guess” – they are better at identifying a guitar and a chair than a coathanger or battery.

The hardware itself is not extraordinary: what has taken Professor Kuniyoshi several years to perfect is the computer algorithm that allows the goggles to know immediately what they are seeing. It is, he says, a problem that has always vexed the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.

But working in a team with Tatsuya Harada, one of Japan’s masters of the science of “fuzzy logic”, Mr Kuniyoshi believes he has cracked the problem. Behind the goggles is possibly the world’s most advanced object recognition software and a computer that can learn the identity of new objects within seconds.

So if the user wanders round the house for about an hour telling the goggles the name of everything from that coathanger to the kitchen sink, they will remember. Then if, at some point in the future, you ask them where you last saw a particular item, they will play the appropriate footage.

Professor Kuniyoshi has even greater ambitions for his software, ambitions that owe a lot to the visual display of the Terminator of science fiction. He describes his goggles as the ultimate connection between the real world and the cyber world and believes that they could eventually be loaded with vast quantities of data from the internet.

With that database installed, the glasses might actually know much more about what the wearer is seeing than the wearer himself – species of animal, technical specifications of vehicles and electronics, or even the identity of people. In a demonstration, the professor showed how the user might, for example, gaze at a selection of unknown flowers and the glasses would say which were begonias, which were ferns and which were pansies.

Although the experimental model, shown exclusively to The Times yesterday, is still too bulky for daily use, the team at the Tokyo University School of Information Science and Technology are confident that it can soon be miniaturised. It could even, they suggest, be small enough to look little different from a normal pair of glasses.

But unfortunately, of course, there is one irritating question they would not be able to answer: “Now where did I put my glasses?”

Still, Hershey wanted more! And she was determined to get it. When her boyfriend begged her to stop, she broke up with him (note to men: You have to support our dreams, no matter how deluded and life-threatening silly they might seem!).

But Hershey was forced to settle with her FFF mosquito bites because "the state of Texas has limits on the amount of silicone that can be injected into breast implants," noted ABC. Reading this, we found ourselves impressed by Texas, because we didn't think it was the kind of state to impose limits on such things, what with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and the state priding itself on everything being bigger there and whatnot.

But, as Hershey discovered through diligent research, they have no such restraint in Brazil! And so now, after a ninth surgery, she's the proud owner of both a 38KKK bust (according to Britain's Daily Star) and the world record for largest breasts. We wonder if Guinness has a category for worst back pain.

Ford India to launch small car in India

Ford India Friday said it will launch a small car in 2011 in order to tap the growing market for compact cars in the country.

“The launch will be a game changer. It will take us into the centre of Indian market,” said Ford Motor executive vice president for Asia Pacific John Parker.

The car will be priced between Rs.3-4 lakh. “It will be in the range that 70 percent Indian consumers buy,” Parker told reporters on the sideline of the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Ford has invested about $500 million in India since 2008.

The company will also launch a refurbished version of its sports utility vehicle – Endeavour – next month.

“We will launch a significantly improved Ford Endeavour in a week’s time. Consumers were looking for higher technology in the product and they will get the same,” said Ford india president and managing director Micahel Boneham.

Kumble’s wife, ex-husband in custody battle over daughter

Cricketer Anil Kumble’s wife Chethana has withdrawn her custody case over her 14-year-old daughter Aaruni with her former husband Kumar V. Jahgirdar in the Supreme Court. The case will now reopen in a family court in Bangalore.

Chethana has challenged a Bangalore family court’s decision to entertain Jahgirdar’s plea for custody of their daughter, who is living with her and Kumble.

Jahgirdar said he is “very confident” of proving in a family court that the “child wants to live with me” and is “is better served in my house”.

The Supreme Court July 27 asked Chethana to try for an out-of-court settlement with Jahgirdar. A bench of Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice R.M. Lodha gave this advice to the two while hearing her lawsuit.

Jahgirdar’s lawyer Prashant Bhushan Friday said that mediation had failed due to the “non cooperation of the mother of the child” and a trial court has to decide on the merits of the case and changed circumstances since the father has remarried.

Since the mother has two more children from Anil Kumble and needs more time for them, the girl’s father is best suited to take care of Aaruni and shower her undivided love, affection and attention.

Chethana’s lawyer Mukul Rohtagi objected to this saying that there is no need to reopen the case in the family court, but judges Chatterjee and Lodha said custody matters are always subject to change according to the circumstances and in the best interest of the child.

Later, Chethana’s lawyer withdrew the case.

Jahgirdar and Chethana got divorced in 1999 and within months Chethana married Kumble.

She moved the Bangalore family court in December 1999 for custody of her then six-year-old daughter left behind with her father. Jahgirdar too moved the family court seeking custody of Aaruni.

The family court subsequently endorsed his plea and allowed him to keep the child.

But on an appeal from Chethana, the Karnataka High Court reversed the family court ruling and gave the daughter’s custody to her mother, saying that in her early years the child’s upkeep and welfare would be taken care of better by a female family member.

As Jahgirdar was living alone then, the child’s interest would be better served in the custody of her mother, the high court said.

In 2004, approached by Jahgirdar, the apex court endorsed the high court’s ruling in favour of the mother.

Jahgirdar re-married in 2006. He again moved the family court seeking the child’s custody on the grounds of changed circumstances.

Chethana first moved the high court challenging the family court’s decision to entertain Jahgirdar’s plea, but her plea was dismissed. She then moved the apex court.

100 million broadband connections in three years: Pitroda

Bangalore: Chairman of National Knowledge Commission Sam Pitroda on Saturday said the Commission has set a target of providing 100 million broadband connections in the next three years.

"We are targeting 100 million broadband connections in the next three years from the present six million at present", he said at a panel discussion on "Transforming India: Reaching the Bottom of the Pyramid", an initiative of C-DOT alumni as part of the silver jubilee celebrations here.

The Commission was optimistic about achieving the target as "the necessary infrastructure, fibre network is already in place apart from the political will," Pitroda said.

He highlighted the need for a "change in the mindset of the government to bring about transformation and to take ICT to those at the bottom of the pyramid i.e the rural poor" and emphasised on an urgency to do away with the government system of filing and go in for electronic filing.

"We can play an important role in sensitising people about it. Though it is a slow process, we need to plant the seeds now", he said.

MUZAFFARPUR: A baby girl was born with her heart outside her chest at a private nursing home here on Wednesday, a doctor attending on her said.

Cardiologist Rajiv Kumar said, "We have kept her in the intensive care unit. The heart beats of the baby are normal."

Bibha Devi, a labourer's wife from Parihar village in Sitamarhi district, delivered the baby at the nursing home.

Arrangements were being made to send her to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi for a follow-up medical attention, he said.

He said it was a rare case in India and perhaps the second after the one reported from the USA in 1975.

Adi to direct SRK in Dhoom 3

Reclusive director Aditya Chopra, who is perfectly content to oversee and remote control the YRF empire while leaving the actual direction of the films to someone else, is now excited at the possibility of Dhoom 3, especially if his wish list of actors is satisfied.

Reportedly Shah Rukh Khan , who can never say no to Adi, has consented to be part of the film. An equally important role has been offered to Hrithik Roshan. Hrithik who is fastidious to a fault sometimes, is supposed to be mulling over the offer, even as he stays busy with his home production Kites and his new film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Guzaarish.

Abhishek Bachchan will of course reprise the Jay Dixit of the earlier two films and Uday Chopra will continue to play the lovable Ali who woos all the pretty girls.

But the icing on the very crowded cake will be that Aditya Chopra will direct the film. But, and this is a big but, only if all the said actors are in place.

But then, has anyone been known to refuse Adi? We think not.

It wasn’t just about building six packs or having the body of a ‘model’, which is easy. I had to look tough and strong and like I can take on the world,” says the actor. Rakhi Sawant goes into her second reality show from Wednesday. It’s a show about parenting with Rakhi and Elesh playing mother and father.

There’s one hitch. Babies give Rakhi a headache. “I’ve a migraine problem. When a child cries I get a severe headache . I don’t know how I’ll manage for a month with a stranger’s child. On top of that I’ve to cook on the show. I can’t cook to save my life.”

Ask her how she will cope when she has her own kids and Rakhi retorts, “Apna bachcha to har koi paal leta hai, jaanwar bhi. I don’t know how I’ll cope. I think I’m going to lose my cool completely. Rakhi was supposed to visit her reality-show fiancé Elesh’s home -town in Toronto. “But I couldn’t get a visa from the US to Canada. I had to really get pushed around for my US visa. It was impossible to get a visa from the US to Canada. Elesh’s family was very keen to have me over. They came for my Swayamvar all the way to Mumbai. And I couldn’t for for them. But no problem. As soon as my new reality show Pati Patni Aur Woh is over I’ll visit his family in Toronto with Elesh.”

Rakhi says she’ll marry Elesh only when he becomes economically self sufficient. “It’s my life and a decision like marriage should be left to me only. Elesh may be the best person in the world. But he may not be be the best person for me.I don’t want him to be another Abhishek Awasthi in my life. Yes,we’re engaged. I like him a lot. But how can I hand over my life to someone who isn’t earning a proper living? That’s why we’re going on another reality show to see whether we’re really as compatible as we seemed on Rakhi Ka Swayamvar.I didn’t get enough time on him on that show. You and I saw his best face.Now I want to see the real Elesh.I want to marry a man who can support me. When we go to a restaurant he should pay the bill, not me. In India wives are supposed to be looked after by husbands, not vice versa. He has seen how I live. I don’t want him to come and stay in my house I want to live in his house. Rakhi is specially worried about Elesh accepting her sexy image. “On the internet they’ve morphed my face on naked bodies. Would Elesh be able to tolerate it? He’s broad-minded, yes. But God knows what he’d be like after marriage.”

She bursts into tears. “Mere dil mein bahut taqleef hai. Will Elesh be able to support me financially? I don’t want him to be known as Rakhi Sawant’s husband. Mujhe waqt chahiye. I feel I’m stuck in a stormy ocean.I can’t climb the cross just to please public. I agree Elesh is educated and he comes from a wealthy family. But all of it belongs to his father. He has nothing of his own in Mumbai, not even a home. He needs time to settle down. In the meanwhile people are spreading dirty rumours about me. Ek insaan kitna bardaasht kare?”

Rakhi is disgusted by singer Mika’s attempts to make mileage out of her name. “I’m really tired of people using my name. I don’t want to give such people more importance. I’ve learnt the hard way how to be dignified.Jesus has taught me to be calm. My good days are just beginning. Let me remind these publicity seekers that short cuts don’t get you anywhere.”

Rakhi says she’s going through a lot of turmoil. “They are writing all kinds of things making up all kinds of quotes about Elesh on my behalf. They’re all taking advantage of me. I’m being used for publicity by so many people. Why are people doing these things with me? Jesus knows how much I’m suffering.”

Speaking on her former boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi Rakhi says, “I still consider him my good friend. I hope and pray he finds a good girl to marry. If ever in life he needs me I’ll always be there. If needs me to be a dance partner in a reality show I’ll gladly do the needful. He has supported me a lot. I’ll always be thankful to him for getting my mother out of my life. That’s one good deed he did. If Abhishek hadn’t been there I’d have not had the courage to break away from my family. I’d have been wallowing in mud. Aaj Rakhi Swant nahin hoti. I’d have been something else. I can’t even say what I’d have been.”

Rakhi thinks her good days have started. “I know Elesh is a decent guy. But is that enough? He has be financially independent. He needed a place and a face to latch on to, that’s why he came on the show. Abhishek Awasthi was so decent. But he was know as Rakhi’s boyfriend.”

Why are we always so eager to ban something or censor it? Isn’t it simpler to just look away from a work of art we disapprove of, not go to watch a movie we don't want to, shun a book that offends us, zap out of a TV show that affronts our sensibility, surf away from a site we don't like. That’s what free will is all about, and democracy. The right to choose what we like, what we don’t; and allow others the same freedom. Instead, today, we’re no longer satisfied making our own choices. We want to disrupt the choice of others. This is dadagiri, the indiscreet art of the vandal. It’s easy to blame the I&B Ministry or the Censor Board, call them Nazis. I do it all the time. But the fact is that they are constantly under pressure. Unlike you and me, they won’t admit to it. Worse, they strut their power and authority while signing off on decisions that subvert the very purpose of their existence which is to protect the freedoms that our Constitution guarantees us. So, as more and more pressure groups come into play and start intimidating the State, through parliament, media, random acts of street violence, the more the Ministry succumbs, the more mistakes it makes. This is exactly how the extremist groups grew. Dadagiri has many faces. But the objective’s the same: To intimidate the silent majority by aggressive acts of violence. So a painter like Husain can’t exhibit his works in India without his shows being vandalised, his art destroyed by tiny groups of art-illiterate vandals, claiming spurious allegiance to Hindutva, who terrorise the organisers while the police look away. We all tut-tut but no one, not even the State, raises a finger to do anything about it. Result? India’s greatest living painter runs away from his home, fearful for his life and safety, and lives in London as an exile while some khaki chaddis celebrate. Sach ka Saamna, on the other hand, gets MPs cutting across party lines jumping up in parliament and demanding its ban. Why? Because some silly people feel that we Indians are so stupid and vulnerable that we will be corrupted listening to someone bare his life secrets in public at 10.30 pm on a pay TV channel which you can easily ask your cable guy to disconnect. Instead, you pay for the channel, bring it home, and then demand the show be chucked off it simply because you disapprove. What kind of argument is that? Why not use your remote? If TRPs are any indication, there are many more watchers for the show than critics in parliament. But whose side does the I&B Ministry take? No prizes for guessing. Savita Bhabhi’s another recent case. No one knew the lady existed in some remote corner of the internet till her fan following grew so big that everyone started talking about this gorgeous, sari-clad, self assured Indian woman who refused to accept male domination in matters of sex and decided to break out and do her own thing. She’s the Simone de Beauvoir of our times, disguised in pop iconography. Where does pornography come from? She’s animated, for God’s sake. But the Ministry has chosen to ban her under a law that makes her out to be a serious threat to the security and integrity of India. You may not believe this either but we can’t buy Rushdie’s Satanic Verses here. You can bring it in from overseas or, like a thief, sneak in a copy from one of the booksellers on the net. But you can’t buy here a book written by one of your finest authors simply because some mullahs in Iran disapproved of it. Worse, Taslima Nasreen got hounded out of India because the mullahs of Bangladesh disapproved of her writings. Balika Vadhu lives under the constant threat of being yanked off the air because some idiots who have obviously not watched the serial think it’s encouraging child marriages. MTV keeps apologising on its ticker for things said on Roadies and Splitsvilla. Billu Barber becomes Billu a week before its release because calling a barber a barber is suddenly politically incorrect. In Aaja Nachle, a song that refers to a cobbler becomes such a contentious issue that three states go to war against the film. So where does it all end? Christian groups want The DaVinci Code censored. Muslim groups want Rushdie banned, Taslima chucked out. Sikh groups want Jo Bole So Nihal yanked out of theatres. Hindu groups want Husain chucked out of every art auction. And all groups want Savita Bhabhi chased off their computer screens lest their women begin to assert their sexual freedom. Isn’t it time the State said: Enough is enough. Isn’t it time to assert the fact that no one can hold our freedoms to ransom. Isn’t that what the I&B Ministry should be out there protecting, instead of backing every thug, every extortionist down the road?

The assassination of Savita Bhabhi

I love Indian women. They are beautiful, charming, sexy and (usually) infinitely cleverer than the men I meet. They are also less pompous and self important. In fact, they deliberately stay under the radar just to play the men around them. This is why I love working with and sharing my life with women. I don’t have to suffer locker room jokes or hear tall tales about fantastic sexual exploits. I can relax with women, have fun and (O yeah) crack jokes about men. I don’t see the six yard sari as a sign of sexual bondage. I see it as a great liberating force. For me, it’s far sexier than jeans, mini skirts and the horrible designer gowns that have suddenly become fashionable. The sari for me, is the ultimate turn on. Remember the rain soaked Madhubala walking into the garage in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi? Or Kareena Kapoor dancing in the rain in Chameli? These are iconic images of sexuality. Both Madhubala and Kareena were sari clad, fully covered. Neither were doing the jhatka matkas you see even pre-pubescent little girls do on reality shows today. Yet they symbolised a rich and vibrant sexuality. As indeed did Meena Kumari in Saheb Biwi Ghulam and Waheeda Rehman in The Guide. Now you know why I love Savita Bhabhi. She’s Indian. She’s sexy and she wears a sari. By banning her site, the I&B Ministry has demonstrated (yet again) how men want to control women all the time. What is Savita Bhabhi’s greatest appeal? That she is a typical Bharatiya nari who is brave enough to demonstrate that when it comes to sex she’s no pushover. I have known many women like her who pretend to succumb to the sexual politics that men incessantly play around them and yet manage to get their way by cleverly manipulating the XXL male ego. So even as they play coy and subjugated, they are actually free women who live their lives on their own terms. I admire such women and worship on their altar. No wonder Savita Bhabhi for me is iconic. She’s the woman who can take all her sexual decisions on her own without fretting over them. Over 60 million fans flock to her site every month, no mean achievement for a sari clad desi nari, her long dark tresses parted dutifully in the middle where the bright red sindoor flames, while a mangalsutra dangles between her ample breasts. The idiots who argue that her’s is a porn site should go visit what real porn sites look like. To begin with, every porn site uses photographs. Filthy, vulgar, exploitative photographs of actual women, not comic book characters having some harmless fun spoofing the way we Indian men treat our women. Savita Bhabhi is a symbol of freedom, of empowerment, of the sexuality our women can wield if they are allowed to escape the sham world we Indian men trap them in because of our own fears of sexual inadequacy masquerading as machismo. That’s why so many rapes happen. We feel inadequate when it comes to having sex with an equal partner. So we want sex slaves as wives, maids, friends, work colleagues, even underage kids. Savita Bhabhi challenges this mindset. The more virgin and demure she looks, the more powerful she is as a symbol of defiance against male chauvinism. Animation underlines that symbolism. It affirms unequivocally that she’s not out to titillate; she’s out to prove a point. The amazing artists who brought her alive (Deshmukh, Dexstar and Mad) have created a person who will survive in our history books as the first Indian comic book character who took on the pigs and made them wince. So much so that the Government of India had to invoke the IT act of 2000, amended in 2008, which allows it the power to ban any website that “threatens the sovereignty or integrity of India, defence and security of the State” or hampers “friendly relations with other states”. No, till date, I have not seen Savita Bhabhi seduce Sarkozy or Berlusconi though I am sure she would have done a pretty decent job of it. Nor have I seen her sleep with the Al Qaida. Even if she did, I would believe she did it in our national interest, rather than to sell any military secrets. Sari clad Indian women don’t usually do that even when they have sex on their minds. C’mon Ms Minister, stand up for women’s rights and sexual freedom. Get your goons off Savita Bhabhi; set her free. Remember what Woody Allen said. Assassination is just an extreme form of censorship and I’m sure you don’t want to kill off India’s first symbol of the sexually liberated woman. There are a hundred surreptitious ways of still meeting Savita Bhabhi on the net but why should we? The Taliban hasn’t taken over India yet.

Sehwag is right, Support him

To any observer of how sports in this country is managed, rather mismanaged, cricketer Virender Sehwag’s decision to challenge the honchos of Delhi and District Cricket Association comes as no surprise. The only surprise is that it has taken so long in coming.

Now there is a whisper campaign that Sehwag is riled because one of his relatives wasn’t picked in the team, hence his threat. Even if it were true, no one is buying the argument and the association bosses must blame themselves for this pitiable state. The whimsical manner in which they have run the association all these years, without accountability, deserves no better.

If anything, I would commend Sehwag for finally taking the stand, as also the decision of some other Delhi players to stand by him. Sehwag, of course, will get the support of not only his fellow players, but also the common man, because he plays the sport that is a religion in India and he has delivered what the public expects of him.

I did not ask for anyone to be selected: Sehwag

And honestly, why blame DDCA alone? One keeps hearing of similar instances from other cricket associations as well. One Uttarakhand player, for example, once came up to me and said he was asked to shell out Rs 10 lakh to be able to get in the 16-member state team (not the playing 11, mind you). I brought this to the notice of the powers-that-be in the state, but doubt if anything happened. I only know that the youngster is now with a call centre in the National Capital Region.

Come to think of it, relatively speaking, cricket is actually one of the better managed sports in this country. If this is the state of cricket, one shudders to think of the the state of affairs in other sports.

There have been disturbing reports in recent times. One talked about a national level player who has resorted to prostitution to make ends meet, and another report showed pictures of women national athletes serving tea and coffee to pot-bellied, slimy, officials at NIS in Patiala. But so immune have we become to such instances that they hardly stirred anyone.

Babus and manipulative politicians, who cannot tell a football from a volleyball, are those who run the show in most places. As long as they get to travel the world as Indian delegation (remember various events when the official delegation is far larger than the participants), they couldn’t care less.

Can the government do anything to help? Yes and No. Ideally, sportsmen should themselves run the sports, for they have been through it all and would, hopefully, be able to understand what the fresh crop require to deliver at the world stage. As for the government, it should merely play the role of an honest facilitator. If facilitating means making the real sportspersons wait outside some babu’s office for hours, it won’t do. It has to ensure that those who are to facilitate are told in no uncertain terms that they are to play a supportive role, and not usurp the role of controlling the sportspersons.

And before I end, please look up the logo of the government’s Sports Authority of India. It has an athletic track that shows motion in clockwise direction. Any fool will tell you that all athletic events take place anti-clockwise. And there rests my case!

Female Sex Offenders: Women Who Rape

Sexual abuse has traditionally been seen as a crime perpetrated by men. To eliminate this possibility, all of the instances chosen for these pages are cases where women are clearly acting entirely on their own. In those instances where a male is involved, it is in every case with an unwilling or obviously underage male.

There is no "evil man in the background" urging these women to engage in sexual abuse. In every case accepted for inclusion in this section, all evidence indicates that the women are acting on their own initiative.

There have been many explanations offered for the startling rise in the proportion of sex crimes committed by women. These include:

zealous prosecution of sex crimes that went unpunished in earlier times
false accusations by spouses who want custody of children
a change in the behavior of women

In recent years there has been a redefinition of abuse, as well. As some of the stories in this section illustrate, the child abuse industry is now so powerful that a woman who tries to report a rape faces the risk of being charged with rape herself if her attacker turns out to be under the legal age of consent.

Courts across America are cracking down on women, especially teachers, who have sex with under-age boys. In the past month at least seven women, four of them teachers, have been charged or sentenced.

A US Department of Education study released in June last year found that 7 per cent of pupils were victims of physical or sexual abuse by teachers or other school employees. Of those, 22 per cent were victimised by a woman.

How to hack a website

I want to show you just one way that hackers can get in to your website and mess it up, using a technique called SQL Injection. And then I'll show you how to fix it. This article touches on some technical topics, but I'll try to keep things as simple as possible. There are a few very short code examples written in PHP and SQL. These are for the techies, but you don't have to fully understand the examples to be able to follow what is going on. Please also note that the examples used are extremely simple, and Real Hackers™ will use many variations on the examples listed.

If your website doesn't use a database, you can relax a bit; this article doesn't apply to your site — although you might find it interesting anyway. If your site does use a database, and has an administrator login who has rights to update the site, or indeed any forms which can be used to submit content to the site — even a comment form — read on.

Warning

This article will show you how you can hack in to vulnerable websites, and to check your own website for one specific vulnerability. It's OK to play around with this on your own site (but be careful!) but do not be tempted to try it out on a site you do not own. If the site is properly managed, an attempt to log in using this or similar methods will be detected and you might find yourself facing charges under the Computer Misuse Act. Penalties under this act are severe, including heavy fines or even imprisonment.

What is SQL Injection?

SQL stands for Structured Query Language, and it is the language used by most website databases. SQL Injection is a technique used by hackers to add their own SQL to your site's SQL to gain access to confidential information or to change or delete the data that keeps your website running. I'm going to talk about just one form of SQL Injection attack that allows a hacker to log in as an administrator - even if he doesn't know the password.

Is your site vulnerable?

If your website has a login form for an administrator to log in, go to your site now, in the username field type the administrator user name.

In the password field, type or paste this:

x' or 'a' = 'a

If the website didn't let you log in using this string you can relax a bit; this article probably doesn't apply to you. However you might like to try this alternative:

x' or 1=1--

Or you could try pasting either or both of the above strings into both the login and password field. Or if you are familiar with SQL you could try a few other variations. A hacker who really wants to get access to your site will try many variations before he gives up.

If you were able to log in using any of these methods then get your web tech to read this article, and to read up all the other methods of SQL Injection. The hackers and "skript kiddies" know all this stuff; your web techs need to know it too.

The technical stuff

If you were able to log in, then the code which generates the SQL for the login looks something like this:

$sql =

When you log in normally, let's say using userid admin and password secret, what happens is the admin is put in place of

$username

and secret is put in place of

$password

. The SQL that is generated then looks like this:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = 'admin' and PASSWORD = 'secret'

But when you enter

x' or 'a' = 'a

as the password, the SQL which is generated looks like this:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = 'admin' and PASSWORD = 'x' or 'a' = 'a'

Notice that the string:

  x' or 'a' = 'a 

has injected an extra phrase into the WHERE clause:

 or 'a' = 'a' 

. This means that the WHERE is always true, and so this query will return a row contain the user's details.

If there is only a single user defined in the database, then that user's details will always be returned and the system will allow you to log in. If you have multiple users, then one of those users will be returned at random. If you are lucky, it will be a user without administration rights (although it might be a user who has paid to access the site). Do you feel lucky?

How to defend against this type of attack

Fixing this security hole isn't difficult. There are several ways to do it. If you are using MySQL, for example, the simplest method is to escape the username and password, using the mysql_escape_string() or mysql_real_escape_string() functions, e.g.:

$userid = mysql_real_escape_string($userid);
$password = mysql_real_escape_string($password);
$sql =
"SELECT * FROM users
"WHERE username = '" . $username .
"' AND password = '" . $password . "'";

Now when the SQL is built, it will come out as:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = 'admin' and PASSWORD = 'x\' or \'a\' = \'a'

Those backslashes ( \ ) make the database treat the quote as a normal character rather than as a delimiter, so the database no longer interprets the SQL as having an OR in the WHERE clause.

This is just a simplistic example. In practice you will do a bit more than this as there are many variations on this attack. For example, you might structure the SQL differently, fetch the user using the user name only and then check manually that the password matches or make sure you always use bind variables (the best defence against SQL injection and strongly recommended!). And you should always escape all incoming data using the appropriate functions from whatever language your website is written in - not just data that is being used for login.

There's more

This has just been a brief overview. There are many more hacking techniques than SQL Injection; there are many more things that can be done just using SQL Injection. It is possible to directly change data, get access to confidential information, even delete your whole database — irrespective of whether the hacker can actually log in — if your website isn't set up correctly.

Amitabh Worried About Aishwarya's Health

NEW DELHI -- Actress Aishwarya Rai is down with a "chest infection" and "flu-like symptoms" and her father-in-law, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, is worried.

"Aishwarya has taken ill and is down with chest infection and flu like symptoms. She had a high fever yesterday, but is settling down today," he posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com Saturday from Singapore.

"It's worrying to be so far away from children and not be there to look after them. Yes, they are mature and married and responsible, but children will always remain children," he added. Ms. Aishwarya is married to Mr. Bachchan's son Abhishek.

The 66-year-old veteran is in Singapore to look after his friend and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who underwent medical treatment there.

"I stay back till he (Amar Singh) is sound enough to travel back," he wrote.

Apparently Mr. Bachchan also is suffering from a "strained back."

1. Using Keyloggers is one of the Easiest Way to Hack an Orkut (or any other email) password. Keylogger programs can spy on what the user types from the keyboard. If you think that you can just uninstall such programs, you are wrong as they are completely hidden.

A keylogger, sometimes called a keystroke logger, key logger, or system monitor, is a hardware device or small program that monitors each keystroke a user types on a specific computer’s keyboard. Keylogger is the easiest way to hack an Orkut account.

2. Phishing Attack is the most popular way of hacking/stealing other’s password. By using fake login pages it is possible to hack Orkut. Here the users land on a page where they are asked for their login information and they enter their Orkut username and password thinking it to be a real page but actually it is other way round. It submits all the entered details to the creator of the fake login page.

3. Orkut New Features: I have come across a page(fake page) that looks like they are giving the user a choice of selecting new features for orkut with your ID and password, of course!! When the user submit’s his/her Orkut login information through this page, there goes his ID and password mailed to the coder.

4. Community Links: Many times you are provided with a link to a community in a scrap. Read the link carefully, It may be something like http://www.okrut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=22910233 OKRUT not ORKUT. This is definitely a trap created by the hacker to hack your Orkut password. Clicking on this link will take you to a fake login page and there you loose up your password.

5. Java script: You must have seen the circulating scraps that asks you to paste this code in your address bar and see what happens! Well sometimes they also leak out your information. Check the code and if you are unsure of what to do, then I recommend not to use it. So be careful, javascripts can even be used to hack Orkut!

6. Primary mail address: If by some means a hacker came to know the password of your Yahoo mail or Gmail, which users normally keeps as their primary mail address in their Orkut account, then hacker can hack Orkut account by simply using USER ID and clicking on ‘forget password’. This way Google will send link to the already hacked primary email ID to change the password of the Orkut account. Hence the email hacker will change your Orkut account’s password. Hence your, Orkut account is hacked too.

So a better thing would be to keep a very unknown or useless email ID of yours as primary email id so that if the hacker clicks on ‘Forgot password’ the password changing link goes to an unknown email id i.e. not known to the hacker. Hence your Orkut account saved.

So, I hope that this post not only teaches you to hack Orkut but also to hack protect your Orkut account.

Will Kaminey survive swine flu threat?

The much-hyped film Kaminey starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra is facing a different kind of problem in the form of swine flu. With the death toll due to the pandemic touching 19 in the country, the Maharashtra Government has banned the screening of films in Mumbai and Pune for three days. That means Kaminey will be released in these cities only on 17th August.
Kaminey, which is releasing tomorrow, on 14th August, has been delayed by three days in Mumbai and Pune but it will be released as scheduled in the rest of the country. Director Vishal Bhardwaj said that the ban is only in the said cities. Shahid also said that they are not sure if the government would allow the screening of the film after three days.
Well, Kaminey opening will surely be affected by swine flu. In fact, it will be badly affected if the people stay away from public places like theatres and multiplexes due to the flu scare. Let’s wait and watch whether it will survive swine flu threat!

Janmashtami is celebrated all over India and across many other countries to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eight avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. The festival falls in the month of August/ September on the ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the eighth day in the month of Bhadon, according to the Hindu
calendar. Lord Krishna's devotees celebrate this blessed day – also popularly known as Gokulashtami, Krishnashtami and Srijayanti – with great joy and enthusiasm.

I still remember my childhood days when I used to get up early on Janmashtami and begin preparing for the festival along with my mother. Janmashtami for me meant an environment full of happiness and joy with lots of fun-filled activities, divine songs, singing and dancing in praise of Lord Krishna. This blessed festival, which marks the birth of the 'Makhan Chor' (Lord Krishna), is not just celebrated in Mathura – His birthplace – but the euphoria pervades all over India, including states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. In northern India, it is very common to observe jhulas (swings) hanging in the courtyards of temples and houses in the honour of the Lord. Colourful Rasleelas (plays) are a major attraction which depict various phases and acts of Lord Krishna's life. Apart from this, decorated Jhankis too attract large crowds. These depict Lord Krishna's childhood days like his birth in the jail, Vasudeva (Lord Krishna's father) taking baby Krishna across river Yamuna, killing of his uncle Kansa etc. But my favourite event is the Dahi Handi ceremony which is mainly witnessed in Maharashtra. As part of the ceremony, participants form a human pyramid to break the mataki (dahi handi) suspended from the top with a rope. In southern India also, Janmashtami is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. In Tamil Nadu, sweets like murukku and seeddai are prepared specially for the day. Eatables made of milk and curd are also offered to the Lord. On this auspicious day several people observe a day-long fast. Since we all know that our 'Natkhat Nand Kishor' (Lord Krishna) is very fond of sweets, especially milk and milk products like butter and buttermilk; so his devotees prepare sweets like pedha, kheer and shreekhand to mark the occasion. Panchamrit is another special dish which is prepared on this day. Close to midnight, the celebration reaches its peak with devotees singing and enchanting shlokas, hymns, blowing the conch (shankh) and rocking the cradle of Lord Krishna. Finally, when the clock strikes 12:00, the idol of Lord Krishna is bathed with Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, ghee, oil, honey and gangajal). Later, this Panchamrit is distributed as Prasad among the devotees. Overall, it is great fun and feels like one is actually rejoicing the arrival of the Lord.

26/11 case: 'Terrorists used outboat machine imported by Pak'

The 26/11 terrorists had used an outboat machine, exported from Yamaha Motor Company in Japan to Pakistan, in their dingy to reach Mumbai.
The fact was revealed on Thursday by the Company's representative, who deposed before the special court, hearing the Mumbai terror attack case, via video conferencing from the FBI office in Los Angeles.
This is for the first time that a witness from abroad is deposing via video conference link in a terror-related case in India.
The witness said the Yamaha machine was used in the boat by which the ten terrorists, including lone surviving gunman Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, arrived at the Mumbai coast.
"The engine had been dispatched by the Yamaha Company in Japan to Business and Engineering Trends Company in Pakistan on January 20 last year," the witness told special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam...

Hollywood's hottest will gather for the 80th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday. Whoever gets the Oscars, you can bet that fans of unrewarded flicks will argue that Academy voters ignored a classic work of art. And it won't be the first time.

Arguments over Oscar-winning movies are endless (Patton: modern masterpiece or inconsequential piece of fluff?). But it is inarguable that many enduring classics were sadly overlooked by the Academy voters of their day. So today, KnowledgeNews honors the dishonored with our list of the Top 5 Most Snubbed Motion Pictures, Oscars Edition.

1. Citizen Kane (1941)

The Academy Awards celebrate artistry in motion pictures, but you'd never have guessed that on Oscar Night 1942, when How Green Was My Valley beat Citizen Kane for best picture. Orson Welles's difficult masterpiece garnered nominations aplenty: best picture, best actor, best director, and more. But at the end of the day, the only award the film received was for best original screenplay. Welles's consolation was that later generations would celebrate Kane as perhaps the greatest motion picture of all time.

2. Chinatown (1974)

If you think that being nominated for an Oscar is what's important, then Roman Polanski's seminal detective drama--starring Jack Nicholson with a band-aid on his schnoz--did just fine. It was nominated for 11 awards, including best picture, best actor and actress, and best director. Luckily, it was also nominated for best screenplay, because that was the only award it won. The Godfather Part II was also in the running that year, and Chinatown couldn't keep pace.

3. Double Indemnity (1944)

Billy Wilder would have been happy to share Polanski's fate. His film--which many call the greatest of all film noirs--was also nominated for many awards, including best picture, best actress, and best director. But it didn't win even one. The alleged best picture this time out was Going My Way, a feel-good musical starring Bing Crosby as the new priest in a troubled Catholic parish. Perhaps wartime America found it easier to celebrate sentiment over cynicism. A month after the awards ceremony, Allied forces took Berlin.

4. Singin' in the Rain (1952)

Jealousy is an ugly emotion, but you could probably forgive co-directors Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen if they were a touch bitter after seeing their picture--arguably the best musical of all time--receive just two nominations (for best supporting actress and best musical score) and no awards. A Cecil B. DeMille circus extravaganza, The Greatest Show on Earth, somehow managed to bag the award for best picture that year, while classics like Singin' in the Rain, High Noon, and The Quiet Man went down to defeat.

5. Some Like It Hot (1959)

Is winning that much better than losing if all you can win is a relatively trivial award? Billy Wilder's manic comedy garnered some respectable nominations (like best actor, best director, and best screenplay), but all it won was the award for best costume design. Apparently, Jack Lemmon really looked good in that dress. The big winner that year was Ben-Hur, meaning that the Academy thought a costume drama was better than Some Like It Hot in everything except costumes.

Special Lifetime Snub Award

And the special Lifetime Snub Award goes to . . .

Alfred Hitchcock.

In his day, Hitchcock was dismissed as an intellectual lightweight, pandering to the public in a series of shallow suspense films. The Academy was at the forefront of the anti-Hitch movement and bestowed a grand total of zero awards on three of his best films: Rear Window (1954), North By Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960).

It's true: Hitchcock gave the people what they wanted--and what they wanted were stylish, intelligent, well-made movies with strong characters and an absorbing story. Not surprisingly, Hitchcock's movies have survived the test of time, while his more-honored contemporaries have fallen into obscurity. So when you watch this year's Academy Awards, keep one thing in mind: today's Oscar also-rans might prove to be tomorrow's timeless classics.
